AUSTRALIA CAN’T TURN A BLIND EYE TO HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSE IN THE SHADOW OF BEIJING OLYMPIC STADIUM

19 October 2020

Independent Rex Patrick has made a submission to the Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Legislation Committee in response to a letter to the Committee by the President of the Australian Olympic Committee, Mr John Coates.

In his letter Senator Patrick provides a comprehensive rebuttal of Mr Coates arguments for the Australian flag to fly at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Senator Patrick sets out his view that China’s gross violations of human rights, including genocide against the Uyghur people, require Australia to boycott the Beijing Games.

"I understand that the Olympics are big business, but the Chinese Communist regime’s violations are on such an enormous scale that they cannot be ignored, downplayed or whitewashed," Senator Patrick said.

"There can’t be Olympic neutrality when we’re talking genocide."
