NO CRIME TO RETURN HOME: SENATE TO BE ASKED TO PROTECT THE RIGHT OF DISTRESSED AUSSIES TO COME HOME

13 May 2021

Senator Rex Patrick will today seek to have his Private Senator’s Biosecurity Amendment (No Crime to Return Home) Bill dealt with by the Senate to immediately change the laws so that the Morrison Government cannot jail everyday Australian citizens just for returning home from overseas.

“It is the role of the Australian Government to help Australians when they are in difficulty overseas, not to criminalise them for coming home,” Senator Patrick said.

“While the Government were quick to walk back their plans to jail regular Australians and sought to blame the media for the backlash from the community, there can be no question that the Government overreached in issuing a determination criminalising Australians just because they come home.”

“My Bill will repeal the current determination and prevent this minister or any future minister from banning Australians, for biosecurity reasons, from returning home during a pandemic.”

“All of the other powers the Minister can exercise to protect the community would remain unchanged, including the ability to order a stay in quarantine.”

Senator Patrick will seek to bring the Bill on immediately during Thursday’s Senate sitting. The Bill can be found here.
