Stranded Australians have been betrayed by a majority of the Australian Senate which failed to support Senator Patrick's Biosecurity Amendment (No Crime to Return Home) Bill.

“The Morrison Government seriously overreached in issuing a determination criminalising Australians trying to come home from India," Senator Patrick said.

"The Bill would have changed the laws so that the Morrison Government, or any future Government, could not jail everyday Australian citizens just for returning home from overseas."

“All of the other powers the Minister can exercise to protect the community would have remained unchanged, including the ability to order a stay in quarantine.”

“It is the role of the Australian Government to help Australians when they are in difficulty overseas, not to criminalise them for coming home."

Senator Patrick thanks the Australian Greens for supporting his efforts to help stranded Australians.
